THINKING LINKS
Some deviant sexual behaviors are simple and repetitive--like cruising bars, aimless driving, looking at possible victims and masturbating--and become mindless habits requiring no conscious thought.  You perform these behaviors over and over, almost like a ritual.  You may use them often to help keep you in a state of mind that forgets the real world.
Many other deviant behaviors require a lot of thought.  Your thinking might be in the form of planning, fantasizing, or self-talk.  Your thinking is always flawed or distorted when you are in a deviant sexual cycle.  No matter which type of thinking you are doing, if you are planning a crime you are not thinking clearly.  To change your life you can't just change the bad behaviors; you must learn to change how you think.  You need to understand your flaws in thinking to change your deviant behavior.

"Stinking Thinking" Leads to Deviant Behavior
No one likes to be told that their thoughts and feelings are flawed or distorted.  But many people occasionally think, feel, and behave in distorted ways--like getting a flat tire and calling the car "stupid."  Clear, effective thinking would be telling yourself that you need to check your tires routinely to make sure they are not getting bald or don't have nails in them.
When you look closely at your life, you find that your deviant cycle involves "thinking errors," lies you tell yourself, and other distortions.  In this workbook we call this kind of "stinking thinking" a thinking defect.  Two forensic psychologists, Drs. Yochelson and Samenow, have described a series of thought and behavior patterns used by criminals.  These thinking defects are very specific about what goes on in an individual's mind and can apply to anyone.  Below is a list of some thinking defects (adapted from their list) sex offenders usually use.  When you are honest with yourself, you will recognize a number of them in your own thinking.
1.  Playing Dumb:  No self-confidence...
2.  Ranting and Raging:  Thoughts focus on anger, outrage, hostility,...
3.  "The One-and-Only":  Thoughts focus on excessive pride, narcissism...
4.  The Dominator:  Thoughts focus on control, overpowering others,...
5.  Polarizing:  Thoughts focus on seeing the world as two clearly different sides...
6.  Scatterbrained:  Unable to stay on track in a conversation...
7.  Great Expectations:  Unrealistic optimism...
8.  Trash City:  Everything is bad...
9.  Lies, Secrets, and Silence:  Dishonesty, big lies and little ones...
10.  Paranoia:  Constant suspicion...
11.  One-track Mind:  Thoughts narrow down to one idea, or one side of an issue...
12.  Projecting:  Taking your own problems and putting them on others...
13.  The Victim:  Focusing on seeing the wold as an unjust unfair place...
14.  Mean-and-Nasty:  Thoughts focus on being belligerent, hostile, aggresive, rude...
15.  "Not My Fault":  Irresponsible thinking...
16.  Denial:  Pretending things aren't as bad as they are, denying the truth...
17.  Blaming:  Pushing your responsibility off on someone else, not being accountable...
18.  "All Mine":  A false sense of ownership, a feeling of being entitled...
19.  Worrywart:  Anxiety, focusing on fear, dread, distress...
20.  Clinging Vine:  Can't do anything by yourself...
21.  Phony Fawning:  Being superficial, insincere, running a con...
22.  "Later, Man":  Procrastinating, avoiding responsibility by putting things off...
23.  "Who Cares":  Indifference, apathy, detachment...
24.  Doormat:  Being passive and unassertive...
25.  "Not So Bad":  Minimizing, belittling the significance of your behavior...
These are just some of the thinking defects...
ASSIGNMENT
Write down at least ten (10) thinking defects that apply to you.  Give an example of how you have used each defect in your life...

AN OPEN LETTER
Revised version
1.  I am a sex offender and I always will be.  We both need to remember this.  I am in the process of getting help to reduce the possibility of reoffense.  You can participate in this process.
2.  I will lie to you.  Don't accept my evasions of the truth becaue this will encourage me to lie.  Half-truths should be treated as a full-fledged lie.  The truth may be painful, but is must be faced.  You are encouraged to pursue the truth when you feel that I am being devious.
3.  I will try to outsmart you.  This will allow me to avoid responsibility and lose respect for myself at the same time...
4.  I will not keep my promises; I have not kept them in the past.  The nature of my deviant behavior prevents me from keeping them even though I mean them at the time...
5.  I will exploit you and take advantage of you...
6.  I will try to avoid the responsibility of my own actions...
7.  I will be unresponsive to your emotions...
8.  I will cover up and try to spare myself the consequences of my actions.  This may reduce the crisis, but it will make my sexually deviant behaviors worse...
9.  I will run away from reality...
10.  I will encourage your participation in a support group which exists to help the partners of sex offenders.  This will help you meet the needs you have which result from my behavior.
A SEX OFFENDER

CLARIFICATION CARDS                              NAME THE GOOD QUALITY

Sex Offenders pick children with real nice qualities and they misuse these nice qualities in children.

Offender will describe the nice qualities in the child they offended and then tell a story of this child's nice quality.

Close it up:  The offender will write in some way that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the child for having these qualities.  In fact these qualities are the best things people have and you should keep them.  There is only something wrong with people like me (offender) who use these special things about kids.
